Athletes Commission Invests in Life Beyond Sport

The Vanuatu Athletes Commission recently brought together athletes from across the country for a two-day Athlete365 Self-Awareness and CV Development Workshop at Ramada Resort.
The workshop was facilitated by Olympic Champion Barbara Kendall of New Zealand and supported through the IOC's Athlete365 programme. More than 30 athletes attended the event, which focused on self-discovery, career development, and preparing athletes for opportunities both during and after their sporting careers.

According to Athletes Commission Secretary Jamal Vira, the workshop reflects the Commission's commitment to supporting athletes beyond competition.
"Many athletes spend years focusing on their sport, but sometimes forget to think about what comes next," he explained. "This workshop helps athletes understand themselves better and start planning for their future, whether that's continuing in sport, pursuing education, or entering the workforce."
Participants took part in activities designed to build self-awareness and develop practical skills such as creating professional CVs and identifying career pathways.
Jamal believes these opportunities are especially important in Vanuatu, where athletes often have limited access to professional development programmes.
The workshop also highlighted the role of the Athletes Commission within the sporting community. While many people know the Commission through athlete representation, one of its key objectives is to provide education, resources, and opportunities that support athlete wellbeing and personal growth.
Looking ahead, the Commission plans to continue promoting Athlete365 resources, organise future athlete forums, and create more opportunities for athletes to develop skills beyond the field of play.
"We want athletes to know that the Commission is here for them," Jamal said. "If we can positively impact even one or two athletes, those athletes can go on to inspire and support others."
The workshop marks another step in strengthening athlete support systems in Vanuatu and ensuring athletes are equipped for success both in sport and in life.
