For swimmer Loane Russet, progress in the pool comes from consistency and preparation rather than focusing on one single event. Her approach to swimming is built around training every day, competing often, and learning from each race.

“Swimming is a long journey,” Loane explains. “You have to be ready every time you compete, not just for one big race.”

Throughout the year, Loane takes part in different swimming events, using each competition to gain experience and confidence. Representing Vanuatu at these events is something she takes seriously and with pride.

When I race, I know I’m representing my country,” she says. “That gives me extra motivation to do my best.”

Balancing Training and Studies in Australia

Currently based in Australia, Loane balances her swimming commitments with her studies, which requires strong discipline and good time management. Her days often involve training sessions, classes, and recovery, all carefully planned.

“It’s not always easy to balance school and training,” she shares. “You have to stay organised and committed.”

This balance has helped her grow beyond sport, teaching her independence and responsibility while continuing to chase her swimming goals.

Training Behind the Scenes

Preparation starts long before race day. Loane follows a structured program that includes pool training, gym work, and recovery. This allows her to handle a busy competition schedule and stay consistent across the season.

“Training can be tough,” she says, “but it’s what prepares you for competition.”

By focusing on steady improvement, she works on technique, endurance, and mental strength throughout the year.

Learning From Competition

Every race brings new lessons. Competing against different swimmers and in different environments helps Loane understand her progress and identify areas to improve.

“Even when a race doesn’t go the way I want, I always take something from it,” she explains.

This experience is especially important when racing overseas, where conditions and competition levels can be very different.

Preparing for the Commonwealth Games

Among the major events ahead, the Commonwealth Games stand as an important milestone. Loane sees it as another step in her development rather than something separate from her normal preparation.

“I’m preparing the same way I always do,” she says. “Training well, staying focused, and trusting the process.”

Her goal for the Games is clear: to swim at her best, improve her times, and gain valuable experience while proudly representing Vanuatu on a major international stage.

Looking Ahead

With the support of her coaches, teammates, and sporting organisations, Loane remains focused on steady progress and long-term development.

“I just want to keep improving and enjoy racing,” she says.

Loane’s journey reflects the wider growth of swimming in Vanuatu — built on commitment, balance, and pride in representing the nation at every competition.
